Position: Traveller Health Worker

Kilkenny Leader Partnership is now recruiting for the above position to work as a part of the Traveller Health Team to improve the health outcomes for Travellers in Kilkenny City and County.

Purpose of the Post

This is a Traveller peer-led programme, where Travellers engage and work with their own community, working towards improving the health status (physical, social, and mental wellbeing) of Travellers and achieving equality of outcomes for the Traveller Community in South Tipperary. The Traveller Community Health Worker will outreach to the Traveller Community to deliver peer-led health education, agreed health messages and health promotion activities to Travellers as follows:

  1. Promote health for Travellers through leading out health promotion, education, training, and information sharing initiatives.
  2. Support Travellers in Kilkenny to access existing services that impact on health and contribute to the promotion of health in the community.
  3. Work in partnership with relevant services to influence policy and practice so that services better meet the needs of Travellers.
  4. Contribute to the development and representation of Kilkenny Primary Health Care Project as part of the staff team
  5. Undertake continuous professional development to fill gaps in your skills, knowledge, confidence, and ability to deliver the role.

Hours of work will be 7 per week based around three days depending on the needs of the service which will be determined by the Health coordinator. Flexibility will be required. 

Requirements for the Post

  1. To enhance communication between Traveller families and health service providers so that best uptake and use is made of Health Services by Travellers.
  2. Support and encourage Traveller families to attend health appointment; identify barriers in up-taking services; assist with Medical Card Applications and renewals.
  3. Outreach and delivery of peer-led health education, health promotion and key health messages on lifestyle changes from the HSE Social Inclusion SECH Traveller Health Programme and signposting of individuals and families to services for support when necessary.
  4. Take part in training coordinated by the Regional Traveller Health Liaison Nurse as well as mandatory and core training provided by Kilkenny Leader Partnership and the HSE.
  5. As part of a staff team, to represent the Kilkenny Traveller Community Health Project on relevant local, regional, and national committees, working groups and interagency committees relevant to the work and as required.
  6. To deliver in-service training on Traveller Cultural Awareness to front-line health services staff and other agencies engaging with Travellers as required -
  7. To participate in research on Traveller health issues as requested by the HSE, the Traveller Health Unit or other relevant agencies.

Requirements of the Post

  • A good standard of education, to at least Junior Certificate level with a good standard of Literacy.
  • Competent computer skills.
  • A good understanding of Traveller culture and Traveller issues, particularly in relation to Traveller health and issues which impact on health
  • Good communication, interpersonal and group work skills as well as the ability to work with relevant families in Kilkenny.
  • Commitment to human rights and social justice and work from an equality and anti-racist work perspective
  • Demonstrate capacity to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to be flexible around working hours with notice.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Access to transport and a full clean driver’s licence are essential.

Position: Traveller Community Wellbeing Awareness Worker

Kilkenny Leader Partnership is now recruiting for the above position to work in partnership with the Community Health Workers in the Traveller Health Project.  The overall aim of this post will be to support Travellers to talk about Mental Health and reach out for additional support when required.

The purpose of the post will be:

  • To work as part of the Traveller Health team specifically in promoting positive Mental Health and Wellbeing within the Travelling community.
  • To liaise with the relevant professionals in promoting the service to the Travelling community in a way that will reduce barriers and build positive relationships. 
  • To access and spread information on Mental Health support services that is available for the Traveller community in County Kilkenny.
  • To identify the Mental Health needs of Travellers and participate in community-based initiatives to develop a response to those needs.
  • To advocate for and represent the voice of Travellers by attending relevant health service meetings. 
  • To attend relevant training courses and participate in training that would develop personal skills to support this role.
  • To support Travellers to participate in Mental Health and well-being initiatives and programmes.

Hours of work will be 14 per week based around two days depending on the needs of the service which will be determined by the Health coordinator. Flexibility will be required.  

Requirement for the Post

  • The person appointed would be a member of the Travelling Community as this is a peer-led position.
  • Be educated to at least Junior Certificate level with good literacy and basic IT skills.
  • Have a good understanding of Traveller issues, particularly in relation to Traveller Mental Health and Wellbeing, and the issues which impact on health.
  • Be willing to undergo training.
  • Can demonstrate good communication, interpersonal and group work skills.
  • Demonstrate capacity to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Access to transport and hold a clean driving license would be an advantage
